HYDE — The Clearfield boys soccer team had plenty of scoring opportunities in Monday’s game against Tyrone at the Bison Sports Complex, but simply couldn’t take advantage of them in a 3-1 loss to the visiting Eagles.
The Bison missed an open net on three occasions and were playing from behind most of the game as the Eagles took a 1-0 lead just 10:14 into the first half and, after Clearfield tied it at 31:16, regained the advantage just 6:25 into the second.
“We definitely had some opportunities and missing those open nets are tough, and it kind of hurts team morale,” Clearfield head coach Todd Trinidad said. “We hit those three and don’t give up some of those penalties, it’s a completely different game.
“But Tyrone played well tonight. They stuck to their game plan and did well.”
A foul led to the first Tyrone score as a direct kick awarded to Rocky Romani from about 30 yards out was stopped by LaRock, but he wasn’t able to control the ball and Noah Gulvas poked the rebound into the net at 10:14.
Fouls were a bit of a problem for Clearfield as Tyrone had several direct and indirect kicks in the first half that either LaRock stopped or the Bison defense cleared. But many of those opportunities led to corner kicks and more pressure by the Golden Eagles.
Tyrone had eight corner kicks in the first half and 11 in the game.
“They did really well getting corners and they’re very dangerous,” Trinidad said. “Rhyan did a great job stopping all of them, but that puts you on defense and slows up your attack and just takes up a lot of time.”
Clearfield actually had the initial dangerous play in the game as a cross to the far post was nearly finished by Brayden Visnofsky, whose header went just over the crossbar.
The Bison also had a corner kick opportunity that produced a big shot later in the half as Micah Johnson came up from his defensive role and fired a hard shot toward the net on a ball Tyrone tried to clear from the box. But Eagle keeper Wyatt Walls was able to corral the shot to keep the Bison off the board.
Clearfield was able to get the equalizer when Jaden Albert’s through ball found the feet of Tucker Scott, who was able to make a move on Walls, who dove at the ball, and fired it into the open net at 31:16 to send the game to the break tied at 1-1.
It didn’t take Tyrone long to regain the lead, however, as a bad pass deep in the Bison end was intercepted by Connor Bardell, who moved in all alone on LaRock and beat him at 46:25 to make it 2-1.
Neither team was able to make much of a push toward the opposing net for the next 10-15 minutes until Scott got loose just inside the 18 and fired the ball toward the bet. Walls deflected it, but the ball ended up going toward Albert, who headed it just wide of the open net.
Not long after, Tyrone made a run deep into the Bison end and the pressure ended up in another foul call against just inside the box, which resulted in a penalty kick for the Eagles.
Romani converted the PK at 64:15 to give Tyrone the 3-1 advantage.
“We’re used to playing a little more of an aggressive game, and the referees are going to call what they’re going to call and we have to deal with that,” Trinidad said. “It hurts to give up a couple goals like that.”
Clearfield had one more good run at the Eagle net late and pushed another shot just wide on an open net.
The loss was the third straight and sixth in the last seven games for the Bison, who slipped to 3-9 overall.
“We’ve definitely been on the wrong end of a lot of games here,” Trinidad said. “We’re just working on putting it all together. We just seem to have a couple bad things happen each game that puts us in a hole, and it’s tough to climb out of.”
There were still some bright spots for the Bison, who are back in action Wednesday, hosting Bald Eagle Area.
“We finally got some guys back from injury and we had some guys really play well,” Trinidad said. “Warren (Diethrick) was back tonight and that was good to see. Tucker Scott played a good game up front, Monte (Diethrick) played a great game on defense and Rhyan played a great game in goal too. So we’re just going to keep looking forward.”
