HYDE — The first time the Clearfield and Philipsburg-Osceola girls soccer teams played in late August, the Lady Bison needed an overtime penalty kick from Alayna Winters to come away with the 1-goal victory.

Thursday at the Bison Sports Complex, Clearfield didn’t need any late match heroics as it got a goal and an assist from Winters and only allowed three shots on goal in a 3-0 victory.

“We’ve been practicing well,” Clearfield head coach Todd Winters said. “That first game we had a lot of young girls playing. We still do. We had two freshmen and a sophomore on the back line. But they just keep getting better as the season goes on. We’re starting to come together at the right time.”

P-O led Clearfield 2-1 at the half in an evenly-played first meeting, but the Lady Bison controlled much of Thursday’s matchup, keeping possession in the Lady Mountie end for long stretches.

“I think their communication has improved a lot,” P-O head coach Joe Matson said of Clearfield. “I think of all the teams we’ve played, they communicate better than any team. My philosophy about soccer is the teams that communicate and talk a lot on the field will be the ones that are more successful. I think they definitely had the advantage there, and that is something that we aspire to be.”

That communication led to some dangerous chances early in the game, but a pair of Lady Bison shot attempts went just wide of the goal.

But a Winters attack down the left wing and across the end line led to the game’s first goal as she sent a pass to a waiting Emily McCracken at the 6 and she fired it past P-O keeper Kinley Bender and just inside the post at 16:50.

Less than four minutes later, Clearfield upped the advantage to 2-0 when Katie Peacock gathered in a rebound of a Mia Smith shot and sent the ball into the open net at 20:56.

P-O nearly cut the deficit in half immediately as it was able to get a push into the Clearfield end and force a corner kick. The initial kick fell harmlessly outside the box and was cleared, but Lady Mountie Kendra Smith stepped to the ball and fired a laser to the goal from about 25 yards out.

Lady Bison keeper Mia Helsel alertly jumped up and caught the hard shot right in front of the net to keep the game scoreless.

That was the first of just two first half shots on goal for the Lady Mounties, who simply couldn’t find a way to get much pressure near the Clearfield goal.

“We tried some different things tonight to manufacture some goals,” Matson said. “We’re trying to leave no stone unturned. We’re also dealing with injuries, so it’s one of those situations that were taking day to day.”

The game went to the half with the Lady Bison ahead 2-0, but Clearfield quickly upped the advantage to three when Kaylie Brown dropped a pass to Winters inside the P-O box and Winters drilled it home just 2:26 into the second half.

“The halftime speech was talking about how the next goal was the most important one,” coach Winters said. “If they get one, they’re just one away, but if we get another one, then heads are going to drop.

“And our girls were fired up. This was the last game on this field for our seniors.”

Matson said the early second-half goal was definitely a tough pill for the Lady Mounties.

“We had a couple situations where we were out of position and they got a couple on us,” he said. “But that one was a little deflating. But all in all they outplayed us. They definitely improved and I commend them for being a really good team.”

The game turned in to quite a defensive battle from there.

Clearfield did manage three more shots, but all were turned away by Bender, while P-O’s only shot on goal of the second half off the foot of Lily Warlow was kick-saved by Helsel.

“Philipsburg has had a lot of really close games,” coach Winters said. “They’ve had some good games that they’ve won and we knew coming in they were going to be a tough challenge for us.

“They had opportunities definitely. You can see that team has progressed over the years. They’ve gotten a lot better. It’s really good competition. Joe’s done a nice job with them. It was a good game.”

While Winters was quite pleased with his team, one place he’d like to see improvement is on corner kicks. Clearfield took 11 in the game, but the Lady Bison had trouble making many of them into dangerous chances.

“We have to finish those corner kicks,” he said. “Sometimes our girls get brave and do headers, but we just have to get a body on them. We had a lot of shot opportunities, but their goal keeper did a real nice job. And we had a few that probably should have been on frame, but they weren’t. But that’s soccer.”

Clearfield, which has won seven straight, improved to 11-4-1. P-O dipped to 7-8.

P-O is back in action Monday at Moshannon Valley.

The Lady Bison travel to Bishop Guilfoyle on Tuesday.
