Kentucky School for the Blind greenhouse expands hands-on learning and career exploration
Students at the Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) are putting science into practice in a new greenhouse designed to support accessible, hands-on learning, independence and career exploration. (LOUISVILLE, KY) – Students at the The Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) students are using a new greenhouse in Louisville, designed to support accessible, hands-on learning, independence and career exploration. The greenhouse, which opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 7, allows middle and high school students to study plant growth and sustainability while developing skills they may use in future employment. Students have already grown pumpkins, potatoes, tomatoes, and spider plants and are exploring soil and watering practices. The project was supported by the Louisville Downtown Lions Club, the Kentucky School For the Blind Charitable Foundation (KSBCF), the Kentucky Department of Education, Kosair for Kids, William M. Wood Foundation, and the Snowy Owl Foundation. Laura Parker, KSB science teacher, said the greenhouse connects classroom science with practical skills and possible career paths. The design includes wide walkways, a tactile map, braille plant signage, and three large tables for student projects.
