HYDE — Clearfield’s offense scored on each of its five, first-half possessions Friday against Penns Valley in a battle of once-beatens and the defense pitched a shutout for three quarters as the Bison celebrated a Happy Homecoming with a dominating 35-7 win over Penns Valley.

The Bison rolled up 362 yards of offense in the first half alone and by the time Rylee Charles was crowned Homecoming Queen during halftime, the mercy clock was ready to roll with the hosts enjoying a 35-0 advantage.

“The kids did a great job and it started with us having a great week of practice,” Clearfield head coach Myles Caragein said. “They were competitive, they were physical with each other. They just need to keep it up.”

Penns Valley did drive the ball well on its first three possessions, moving into Bison territory on each and getting into the Red Zone on two series, but the Clearfield defense was able to force a punt and two turnovers on downs.

After the Rams first punt went just 26 yards, the Bison set up shop at its own 35.

Clearfield needed just four plays to reach paydirt as alternating runs from Brady Collins, Carter Freeland and Carter Chamberlain went for 22, 7 and 5, respectively, before quarterback Will Domico found Freeland for a 31-yard TD pass at 8:06 of the first.

Penns Valley went right down the field on the ensuing series, making it all the way to the Clearfield 17. But on fourth-and-3, the snap to Ram QB Jackson Romig was high, which messed up the timing of the play and sent the Penns Valley signal caller scrambling to try to get the first down.

Instead, Isaac Putt dropped him for a 14-yard loss and Clearfield took over at its 31.

“The defense bent a little bit,” Caragein said. “(Penns Valley) has a lot of good players. (Ty Watson, Meyers, Romig), they have some studs on their team. But we didn’t get our heads down when they made some big plays. We kept fighting and rallied and stopped them.”

The Bison moved 69 yards in six plays, getting a 16-yard TD run from Cayden Bell at 2:48 of the first quarter. The Bison overcame a holding penalty that made it first-and-20 at the 32 as Chamberlain burst up the middle for 16 yards after the flag to set up Bell’s run.

Connor Morgan added the first of his three PATs to make it 13-0.

Once again the Rams drove deep into Clearfield territory as Watson ran for 55 yards in the series, including a 40 yarder. Watson had 101 yards on 9 carries in the first quarter and finished the game with 217 on 23 totes.

But the Bison defense again got off the field on fourth down when Nolyn Rockmore dropped Romig for a 1-yard loss.

Clearfield took over at the 20, but was whistled for a holding penalty on the first play, pushing the Bison back to the 10.

That was simply a minor inconvenience for Clearfield, as Domico connected with Freeland on a fly pattern on the very next snap. Freeland caught the ball in front of the Bison bench and raced 90 yards for the touchdown.

Domico then found Chamberlain for the 2-point conversion and a 21-0 lead at 10:00 of the second quarter.

“That was definitely a momentum-changer,” Caragein said. “We noticed on film they were doing a lot of pressure to the left side, sending two. We called a play to get it outside and our athletes just made a play. It was a great run by Carter.”

That sequence seemed to take the wind out of the Rams sails as their offense went backwards on the next series.

A holding penalty followed by a 14-yard loss, thanks to a Chamberlain sack had the Rams in a third-and-30 from their 13. After an incomplete pass, Penns Valley punted back to the Bison, who took over at midfield.

A pair of Collins’ runs totaling 40 yards highlighted the drive, which ended with a Chamberlain 11-yard burst up the gut, giving Clearfield a 28-0 lead with 5:20 left in the half.

A Jonathan Rowles sack on third down forced another three-and-out from the Rams and Clearfield started its fifth and final drive of the half at its 46.

A couple Bison penalties got them into a third-and-27 situation, which Domico and Freeland once again overcame with a 46-yard pass play on a wide receiver screen.

Moments later, Collins caught a 22-yard TD pass from Domico with 1:05 left in the half. Morgan added the all-important extra point and Clearfield took the 35-0 lead to the break.

The Bison got the ball first in the second half and drove from their 48 to the Ram 20, but the offense stalled for the first time and Clearfield turned it over on downs.

After Penns Valley’s next possession ended on downs at the Bison 39 on the second play of the fourth quarter, Clearfield went to its junior varsity team.

The Rams did get on the board with 6:50 left to play on a Watson 34-yard run, but the Bison ran out the clock as Obrian Owens carried eight times for 37 yards on the next series, converting a pair of first downs along the way.

“They’re a unique crew with a lot of great talent,” Caragein said. “It’s a nice problem to have of ‘who do we want to give the ball to?’ They’re all great players. They run hard, they block, they play of each other. They’re great kids, and they do well when they get the ball.”

Domico was 7-of-10 for 207 yards and three TDs. Freeland caught four passes for 165 yards and two scores.

Collins led the ground attack with 66 yards on just seven carries, but the Bison ran for 220 yards on 31 totes as a team. Owens ran 11 times for 42 yards in the fourth quarter.

Clearfield, which improved to 5-1, now embarks on a tough 3-game road trip that starts next week at undefeated Bald Eagle Area.

“Anytime you go on the road it’s going to be a tough test,” Caragein said. “So this was a good momentum-starter for us. We have a lot of things to correct. We’ll go into film session on Sunday, well work with the kids and we’ll get ready to go.”
