“It’s great for the sport to have number one and number two facing each other in the final of a major tournament,” Djokovic said in an on-pitch interview. “I think that’s what everyone wanted and expected at the start of the tournament and here we are.” In the head-to-head of the two finalists, Alcaraz is 2-1 ahead of the Serbs. The 20-year-old also won the most recent duel in the Wimbledon final.
Notably, Alcaraz now required three sets in all of his matches in Ohio, including his quarterfinal win over qualifier Max Purcell on Friday. “People think I’ll be tired in the final, but I feel good,” he told reporters. Djokovic, on the other hand, did not drop a sentence when he returned to the USA, where he was unable to enter the previous year due to his corona vaccination status.
For women, Gauff won for the first time in the eighth duel with Iga Swiatek. The 19-year-old American prevailed against the world number one from Poland with 7:6(2),3:6,6:4. She is now fighting for her fifth WTA tournament victory on Sunday. Opponent is the Czech Muchova, who defeated the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka 6:7(4),6:3,6:2.
Gauff shone with her serve, but also with strong hits from the defensive. “After losing the second set, I said to myself: ‘I’m a fighter, I can do it’. I fought for every point and took my chances,” said the US ace. She has clearly shown what she is capable of. “A lot of people had doubts about my game, but I’m constantly evolving,” said Gauff. She is allowed to try her hand in a final at the WTA1000 level for the first time.
