Trump administration asks Washington to set aside 400 voters' ballots

In a letter to the Washington Secretary of State’s Office, the DOJ said it had identified 1,500 votes cast by the over 400 people in prior elections The Trump administration has asked Washington state to set aside any ballots from more than 400 people it suspects registered to vote without U.S. citizenship. The Justice Department has identified 1,500 votes cast by the over 400 people in prior elections and asked the state to confirm they are legally eligible to vote. The state has over 5 million registered voters. Much of the list was built based on "recent contacts" with suspected noncitizens, as federal officers are now checking if they are registered to voting. Without access to state records, proving someone illegally voted will be a difficult and labor-intensive process. This is part of a larger effort by the administration to identify noncitizen voters, even though noncitizens voting is rare. The request is similar to a Justice Department attempt to require California to sequester mail ballots from up to 20,000 people suspected of being noncitizens.
